Happy Birthday!

Okay so first of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY Chubby Cheeks!!!
I love you soo much Broski and I cannot believe you are turning 14! I hope I got that right. You are so amazing and I feel beyond blessed to have you as my little brother. I hope everyone around you can see just how amazing you are! You mean the world to me and I love you more than you know! Continue to listen to mom and dad. Know that I love you but most importantly your Father in Heaven loves you! Happy Birthday on Wednesday!!!

Love your Favorite Sister! Happy Birthday Brandon!

New Mission, New Companion, New Area, New Environment and I get to work with a WARD:

Okay so I have no clue where I should start.

So I have been assigned to serve in Spotsylvania, VA which is in Fredricksburg, VA which is about 45 minutes to an hour, I think, from Washington DC. This area is just amazing in ALL aspects! The work is going great here, the area is so pretty, and the ward is phenomenal! We had Zone Conference on Thursday so I didn't meet my new companion until right before Zone Conference started. She is AMAZING!!! I'm pretty sure I'm the one being trained in this companionship. Yup, I'm training! Which I don't know why because she came out already trained. I'm actually follow up training her. Sister Lytle, another Temple Square Sister who just left, trained her and then President Wilson is having me follow up train her. Her name is Sister Stoddard and she is from Sandy, UT. You would think she was born and raised in the church. However, she has actually been a convert for only 2 years and today is her 2 year anniversary. Crazy, right? She graduated high school last year however I'm only like 4 months older than her. She is just AMAZING though. I truly feel like I'm the one being trained by her. If I wasn't told I was follow up training I truly would've thought she was in her last transfer. She is ever so slowly showing me the ropes of tracting, which by the way, is petrifying! Haha, so not good with that thing yet. But it will be mastered before I leave in April.
The drive to Lake Anna with my
comp - Sister Stoddard
Lake Anna
My new area is HUGE! It takes us about an hour to get to the other end of our area. We are up near Fredricksburg and our area goes all the way down to the county border at Lake Anna. We decided to drive out there yesterday because we wanted to tract out there and we were having dinner with our Bishop who lives out there as well. It is absolutely gorgeous. Just picture rolling grass hills, lots of trees and back country roads and that's what you would have seen. The work out here is going pretty well. We have about 7 people who are progressing and who are coming to church pretty regularly however none are on date [for baptism] for certain reasons. I'm hoping that changes though this week.

Spotsylvania Ward equals my WARD! Ahh I just LOVE this ward so much already! I have never met a ward before so supportive and in love with missionary work and with missionaries. It's just amazing. They are always asking what they can do for our investigators. I haven't met her yet but Sister Stoddard says there is a lady in the ward with 9 children, two of whom have a disability, and she will come on splits with us pretty much all the time. I'm like wait what?? She is apparently amazing. I just LOVE our Relief Society Presidency! They are some of our best friends. They are always willing to help us out with anything and are just so supportive. I have only been here for what, 5 days? But I'm going to be so sad when I have to leave this area. So on Sundays we have Ward Coordination meeting. Haha, yah it's at 6:30 a.m. and our building is a 20 minute drive... So our wake up time is like 5:30 in the morning on Sundays. Haha, gotta love missionary work.

I'm trying to think If I'm missing anything. Oh here is my new address before I forget:

Please feel free to write me! We check mail Monday-Saturday! :D

Ezra Taft Benson:
Saying goodbye to my
trainer!
I loved serving with my
French companion!!
On Saturday we went to a special Fireside where we got to hear from President Ezra Taft Benson's daughter. She talked about him and shared about his life with those who showed up. He is truly amazing. It makes me feel so blessed to have a living prophet on the earth today. Heavenly Father didn't just love those who lived back when Abraham and Moses were alive but he loves each of us. And so he called another Prophet to lead and to guide us and to share with each of us this plan that our Father in Heaven has established for us. I'm so incredibly grateful that we have a living Prophet on the earth today. Our Father in Heaven has called some truly remarkable men to lead and to guide us. Ezra Taft Benson was one of those amazing men that our Father in Heaven called. He did so much and truly did the best he could to live the Gospel. How are we following the Prophet? We read in the Bible in Deut. 18:18 and Amos 3:7 that our Father in Heaven has called these men to share with them this plan that he needs each of us to know about. I can testify with my whole heart that as you listen to the council these men share you will not be lead astray because they are the mouthpiece of our Father in Heaven. There is a scripture that says whether by my voice or by the voice of my servants it's the same. It's so true. Please listen to the prophet and do all that you can to hold on tight to the Gospel.

A Miracle Tracting:

Sis. Skaggs signing a song
in Dec. 2011
As I mentioned earlier, tracting is so scary! Well, we decided to tract out near Lake Anna which is super nice homes. We were in this particular area and no one was answering their door. Well Sister Stoddard sees this human, as she puts it, down this little hill. We looked over a couple minutes later but didn't see anyone. We decided to head to that home however no one was there. As we were walking up we saw the lady and were trying to talk to her but she wasn't responding back. She sees us and then starts talking back but it was kind of hard to understand. She then started using her hands and that's when I immediately realized she was hard of hearing. So, I got to sign with her and tell her who we are and what we do [Jennifer, Sister Skaggs, took three years of sign language in high school]. She was so sweet and was signing back to us that she loves God but that she wasn't interested. I got to sign back and forth for about 10 minutes with her. It was a simple miracle that Heavenly Father allowed me to see. I was becoming discouraged as it was my first time doing it and people weren't responding. It made my day allowing him to put that lady in my path. Heavenly Father truly knows each of us and he knows what we are going through in our lives. Look today for those simple miracles he puts in your life. And don't give up! We found a lady at the very end of the day down there right before dinner with Bishop who was interested and receptive in learning more. It was on a street we had passed by multiple times. Trust in the Lord and don't give up. We don't see a witness until after the trial of our faith.

Well I have to go! I love you all!

Family PLEASE BE SAFE! Oh and get those security cameras in asap please! I love you four so much and feel so blessed to have you as my Eternal Family! Again please be safe. I'm not worried though because I know Heavenly Father is watching over and protecting you. Know that I pray for you! Good Luck this week!

Love,
Sister Skaggs

A Time For Miracles‏

A note from Sister Skaggs mom - sorry I haven't put up her blog the last two weeks. Computer problems. I'm hoping all is fixed and I can upload pictures again.  In the meantime, even if I can't get the pictures uploaded I will just post her e-mail and add pictures later.  Enjoy!

To All I Love,

So this e-mail is going to be super short and won't be like the rest of them because I only have about 5 minutes to write this e-mail. Due to the fact that I don't have a preparation day for just under 2 weeks the AP's have given the sisters who will have to wait over 10 days for their next p-day time to write home for about 15 minutes. So that is why I'm writing now.

Things have been amazing this past week! I want to share one small miracle before I have to go.

Tracy and Michael:

Ahhhh, I just LOVE THEM sooo much!! I was almost in tears when I had to say goodbye to them on Sunday night. They are amazing. They weren't able to attend church on Sunday due to the fact that the wedding is on Thursday. But they said they look forward to being able to attend when they get back. They are flying to Hawaii for a week for the honeymoon and then Michael has a quick business trip to Washington. But as we were talking they asked us when we would be able to see them again. We mentioned, "Well, whenever you can." Michael was like, "Well, how about when we get sealed in the Temple." Ummm wait what?? Yah, that is exactly what he said. Sister Bryuzgina and I just about literally fell out of our chairs in the Teaching Center. We were like, "Wait, when do you want to get married in the Temple?" They said, "When we can." We told them it would probably be about a year because they will have to wait till they have been baptized for a year. I told them that if they were sealed after the first of Feb. of next year that I wouldn't miss it for the world. So Mom and Dad, if you want, I will be flying to Florida probably pretty soon after I get off my mission for their sealing. Well, that is if everything works out. But they were like, "We can't wait to get back from everything and just relax and be able to focus more on learning, etc." We will continue to keep in touch with them via e-mail while we are outbound and they promised they would send us pics of the wedding. Ahh, I wish you could be here to meet them. I will miss them so much! But I know I will be able to see them again someday hopefully at their sealing next year. They are beyond prepared to receive the Gospel in their life and I can't wait for the day when they will be baptized and will be able to enter into that covenant with their Father in Heaven and start that journey back home to their Heavenly Father.

Zone Accountability:

So the pictures I sent home were from Zone Meeting on Friday. The pictures are of us with our other faces. The Zone Leaders took pictures of us and then a computer system figured out what we were supposed to look like. Apparently I have a really wide face... Hmm, wasn't a happy camper with that one. Haha! They were like, "Sister Skaggs, that looks like you - well, when you smile, and the eyes on you have cute Asian eyes." I just laughed. Haha. I have always had Asian eyes since I was born. But it's crazy to think but as a Zone we exceeded our baptismal goal. We had a goal of 20 and we had 26 baptisms this transfer. One companion had 10 BAPTISMS this transfer!! Yah, I dropped my jaw when I heard that as well. It's possible. Just trust in the Lord at all times and have faith.
Well I have to get going! The next time I will e-mail you I will be in VIRGINIA. I'm beyond excited for this next step! I will be with my new mission president in less than 48 hours now! I know this is where I'm supposed to be and I look forward to being able to share with you all the amazing people I meet and experiences I have over there. I love you all!!

I can't forget to write at least one spiritual thing. I love 3 Nephi 27:5. I love how it talks about how we are taking Christ's name upon us. Ask yourself how am I taking his name upon me? Am I representing him in all that I do? I love that verse. I invite you all to read it and study it. I love my Savior so much and I feel so blessed to have him in my life and to have this Gospel in my life!

I really have to get off now! I love you be safe and I will talk to you next week!!

Love,

Sister Skaggs

Guess who is going OUTBOUND?? ME‏

Note from Sis. Skaggs mom -

I hope you enjoy her letters each week and can feel the love she has for our Heavenly Father and his son, our Savior, Jesus Christ and the excitement she has toward serving her mission.  God bless you all!

Here's this week's letter:

I love you ALL.... even if I don't know you!

Where oh Where Do You Think Heavenly Father Needs ME to Go???

Okay so I cannot believe that I am actually going OUTBOUND this TRANSFER!! But at the same time Heavenly Father has been preparing me these past couple of weeks for it. So by this point my parents and brothers have plastered Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as to where I am going so I probably don't even need to say it. Okay fine I guess I will tell you.

Let me read you my new Mission Call!!!

"Dear Sister Skaggs,

This is to advise that effective with the next transfer, you have been temporarily re-assigned to serve in the Virginia, Richmond Mission. You will serve there for a period of two transfers. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to see firsthand how wards and stakes must work together with full-time missionaries and their investigators. This experience will make you an even more effective missionary when you return to the mission or your primary call, the Utah Salt Lake City Temple Square Mission."

There is more to the letter. I sent pictures of my letter so you can look at the pictures. But can you believe it? I am going to VIRGINIA!! I'm beyond excited for this new step in my mission. I have no idea what awaits me over there but I know that this is where the Lord needs me for the next 3 months. There is no one here on Temple Square that I will benefit these next 3 months. But someone over there needs me and needs me now.

The funny thing about this is I have felt strongly this past transfer that I was going outbound. EVERYONE said there is absolutely no way President would be sending me out this early considering I'm only going into my 5th transfer and most sisters are going in their 7th, 8th, and 9th transfers. I don't know. I just had this feeling that it was my time to go. And it's weird, too, because for personal study the past 2 weeks I have been watching the District and have been studying as to how those missionaries were able to find [people to teach], since it's a little different here [on Temple Square]. I have been watching all of the episodes and have been really paying close attention to how they interacted in person with members and investigators. It's funny because last week when I e-mailed you I told you to pretty much expect a phone call from me next week informing you of me going Outbound. But, at that point I had no clue I was going I just felt like I would be going. It reminds me of when I got my original mission call and I told you, Dad, that I would be going to Temple Square for my mission but you told me to knock it off [guessing where I would be going]. And then 3 days later I received my mission call and I was going here to Temple Square. I just had this thought and then feeling that I was going outbound, it was exactly like when I first got my mission call to here. And what makes it even crazier is the night before I received my new assignment I was looking online at missions throughout the country and I was like "I think it would be really awesome if I went Outbound to the Virginia Richmond Mission." And who knew that just 12 hours later I would open an envelope that said that I was being re-assigned to that specific mission? I don't know why Heavenly Father allowed me to have those thoughts or impressions. I think for me it is a confirmation that I'm supposed to be going to Richmond, VA. Of course, it's going to be hard, but I know it's going to be one of the best experiences I have had so far on my mission. It will be different, that's for sure, on many different levels but I'm excited! I have never worked with Elders before or have gone to a family ward every Sunday as a missionary or have had meals in members homes frequently so it will be a lot to adjust to but I'm ready for this new adventure. I think the part I'm most excited for is for being able to work with members in regards to missionary work. Oh, and having members as member presents for EVERY lesson! It is so hard to have that happen here on Temple Square and it drives me insane when I have to put 1 for my weekly goal here. Oh and I'm excited for being able to go to church with my investigators and being able to meet them in person. Haha - I will be dragging ALL of my investigators to church whether they like it or not. No longer will I have to scramble at 8 o'clock at night to see if they attended church so we can put it in our numbers. From now on I will be able to know right after Church!!

In regards to my flight Itinerary, I will be leaving Temple Square at 6:30 AM on Wednesday Jan. 21st. I will fly out of Salt Lake at 8:30 AM. I will arrive in Atlanta at 2:15 P.M. I will have a 1 1/2 hour layover then leave Atlanta at 3:40 P.M. and then I will arrive in Richmond at 5:15 P.M. That is the basics as to what is happening. I will know more later on. I will have 15 minutes to email next Monday or Tuesday and so I will tell you more about it then.

An Update on the People I'm Leaving Behind:

John (Cape Town, South Africa) - So he is getting ready to move in 2 weeks to Johannesburg for work, which is so exciting because it will be so much easier for him to attend church. He is a leader in his church right now and so it is a little tough for him to attend church right now with him being a leader. But when he gets to Johannesburg he will have a fresh start and work won't be so overwhelming. GUESS WHAT??? He read parts of the Book of Mormon!!! I was sooo HAPPY!! I was afraid I was going to have to drop him [as an "investigator"] if he hadn't done either of those. But he told me, "I started reading the Book of Mormon on Tuesday. I have read a page a day and I just left off at the part that talks about the different sections." I was so happy! And get this, he is reading it online because he doesn't have a personal copy since the local missionaries haven't been to him yet. He is still wanting to learn more and I got the time difference wrong so I called him later than I was supposed to. But he was like "I have been waiting for your call for an hour now. I was going to go to my friends house but I decided to wait for you to call me." He is so awesome! I will be transferring him to one of the new South African Sisters who will be coming in this transfer. I can't wait to hear how things go when I get back in April!

Wendell (Salt Miner from Ohio) - Well I felt bad for just dropping Wendell and I felt like I needed to call him. So I called him and after 1 month he finally answered!! But he told me, "Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to help me but I don't feel the Mormon Church is for me. I have been trying to feel God's love but I just can't." That was one of the first times I have had an investigator drop me. He was so sweet about it. To be honest, if he would have just kept the commitments he would have been able to feel of God's love. I told him I would be going to a different mission and he was super excited for me. I told him I would call him sometime again before I left my mission and he said, "I would appreciate that, Jennifer. I look forward to when you call again. I will keep you in my prayers and think about you occasionally. I appreciate everything you have done for me."

Tracy and Michael (Couple from Florida, getting married next week) - Unfortunately we have not talked with them this past week. Things have fallen through. However, we are calling them tomorrow so we are excited about that. We will find out more tomorrow as to how their progress is going and to who we will transfer them to. Things are a little hard because they will be getting married next Thursday at Disney World.

Julio (Recent Convert from Pennsylvania) - Okay so I just love him! He is just funny as can be. I haven't talked to him in like a week. But I will for sure talk with him before I go outbound. He is doing well. He is meeting with the Elders every week and is still going to church and is loving it. When we talked last time he said he was sending me a letter in the mail but I still haven't gotten it but it usually takes sometime. I'm crossing my fingers it gets here before I leave for Virginia but it's okay because Temple Square will just forward all of my mail to me. I don't think I will transfer Julio to anyone. I will just let him know I will call him again in 3 months. I haven't prayed about it yet as to if I should transfer him to someone. So, yah, Julio is doing well!

Raymond (Recent Convert from Arkansas) - He is doing well. I don't hear from him as often because I know he is doing well and I know he doesn't really need me communicating with him. He sent me a text yesterday and informed me he is getting his Patriarchal Blessing on Sunday! He is super excited about that. I know he is because we talked about that a couple months ago and he was super excited to get his.

Brown Family (Recent Converts from Arizona) - They are just doing amazing! They are continuing to just thrive. Melissa (the mom) had a question about an aspect of the Gospel that was discussed in Sunday School that she didn't quite understand so we explained it a little be more as to what it was. I'm kind of sad that I will have to transfer her to someone else. I will miss being able to talk with her every Sunday but I know there is a time and a place for everything and I know that Heavenly Father doesn't need me to be in contact with her anymore.

My MTC Investigator... Remember LEAH!!!

Okay so you remember Leah from the MTC!! Guess what? I saw her on Sunday!! She was here on Temple Square and even came to church with us on Sunday!! I received a text in the morning from another Temple Square Sister saying that Leah was coming to church. I just about died when I read that text. I looked at Sister Bryuzgina and was like "We need to hurry and get to church." She walked in right when we started the opening song. Afterwards, I went over and gave her a huge hug. She has no idea just how much of an impact she has had on my mission. I love her so much! I got left behind so I had to stay with her and another companionship and so I got to talk with her and hear how things were going for like 30 minutes. When I was leaving she said, "I'm glad you are here." It just made my day. I can't believe it was almost 6 months ago that I met her. Can you believe it?! I was at the MTC with her 6 MONTHS ago! I wish I could see her more often. But she will always be a part of my life, whether she likes it or not. (I wrote that because I know she will read this, because she told me that she still reads my emails). Leah, I love you and I'm so grateful to have you in my life. It truly made my day on Sunday seeing you! Haha - remember Ether 12:27 (Inside Joke) ;).

You're Serving a MISSION? And you're from WHERE?

So get this, on Saturday I was covering for a companionship at Map Desk and this guy walks up with his family. We start talking and we find out the young man that is with him is from SYRIA!! He is the FIRST MISSIONARY from Syria to be serving a mission. We were in complete shock when we heard about it. I was like "Wait, so where are you from?" He says, "I'm from Syria." Yah, ummm, the Church isn't IN Syria!! He and his family are the ONLY members in Syria. I was like "How did it all work?" He tells me, "My mom became a member in Romania when she went to school and then she moved back home. We escaped from Syria a couple of months ago and now live in Lebanon." He was telling me stories and stuff, it was just crazy. Just imagine if you were in the missionary department and missionary forms came across your table and it was from someone in Syria. I would be like "Wait. What?" He is super excited though, to share the Gospel. If you remember Elder Callisters talk about a little girl from the Oct. General Conference who knew so much about the Gospel.....that's his little sister. It goes to show that despite what's happening around you, like literally what's happening around you, you truly can live a Gospel centered life and raise your children in a Gospel centered environment. So that was pretty neat!

Helaman 10:4-5:
I love these verses. They are so powerful and they remind me as to who I want to be when it comes to being a missionary and just in general! We truly should be firm in the Gospel and should be dedicated to sharing it and doing the will of our Father. I love the footnotes on unwearyingness - "Dedication, Dependability, Priesthood, Magnifying Callings and Steadfastness". How are we doing such a thing? Are we dedicated to the cause? Are we dedicated to magnifying our callings not just as being missionaries but callings He gives us within his church as parents, children, friends? Of course we aren't perfect. But I love the blessings that come as we dedicate our time to doing what he has asked of us. He says, "I will bless thee forever; and I will make thee mighty in word and in deed, in faith and in works;" Are we dedicated to building His Kingdom? Are we fearing man or are we looking to Him and His will?

I love you all!! Don't ever forget who you are! The Gospel is true!

Love,
Sister Skaggs

Becoming Purified by the Hands of our Maker‏

Loved ones,

Give Yourself to the Lord:
It's funny how when you go on a mission you learn so much, so much about who you are as a person. So many things are shown to you. It's hard, the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. There is a quote that was shared in fast and testimony meeting that I want to share with you. It pretty much describes what I have been going through and am still going through and will continue to go through.

"When a silversmith is purifying silver, he places it into the hottest part of the fire, and holds it there while all the dross or impurities are burned away. He can't hold it there a second too long, otherwise the silver will be ruined. He knows the silver's done being purified the second he can see his reflection in it. Likewise, this analogy can be applied to us. Our trials and experiences are what refines us - the whole time we're in the fire our Heavenly Father and his Son, Jesus-Christ are watching over us. They allow us to continue enduring the heat, until we've been sufficiently purified, and He can see His reflection in us"---- Taken from one of Sister Rachel Desjourdy's zone meetings

You know, this is me. I have been out on my mission just 1 week shy of hitting my 6 month mark. It has been the hardest thing I have ever done. I have often asked myself why? Well, so many different why's. That is the answer. A mission is the time for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to purify each of us. We are each being refined, molded, and reshaped into who he needs us to become. And he needs us to become more like Him and his son, Jesus Christ. I have asked myself, why, why is this so hard. But it's because of that. Reality is, a mission isn't supposed to be easy. We shouldn't even think for a second that a mission should be easy. Honestly, I feel it should be one of the hardest things we do in our life. Because it can be one of the only times in our life when we truly can submit our will to our Father in Heaven. A dear friend of mine shared with me some lines today that really stood out to me. They said "...Do what the Lord wants of you and you will be blessed beyond belief and give yourself up to the Lord, all of you, and he will make you an instrument in his hands..." It's true. As we truly give our self up to the Lord, all of us, that's when we can truly become purified. Have I truly given myself up to the lord, everything up to the Lord? No. I would be lying if I said yes. But I know that as I continue to give myself up to Him just so many things will happen. I want to finish my mission saying, "I did what the Lord expected of me." A mission is a refiners fire. I wouldn't trade being on a mission for the world.

I want you to just think about this question: How am I becoming purified by the hands of my maker??

Well What Should I Do Next??:

The Reflection pool and the
temple at Christmastime
I explained to you last week about Tracy and Michael. We called them on Saturday to talk with them. When we first called she mentioned they had company over and asked if we could call back in 2 hours. We mentioned that was okay. I was a little skeptical about everything. But we called back and she was really excited to talk with us. She mentioned they were looking forward to us calling them and were hoping we wouldn't forget about them. We just asked how the trip was, how they liked Temple Square etc. But then the local missionaries popped up. I don't know how we got onto that topic but we did. So we met them on Sunday and we sent the request for local missionaries Sunday afternoon. Now, when we send referrals out to local areas it usually takes some time and we often have to escalate referrals. Tracy proceeds to tell me that they arrived home Tuesday evening and just 1 hour of arriving home a knock came to the door. Guess who it was?... The local missionaries. I was scared as to what she was going to say about it but she mentioned that they had met them once after that and they were coming over again!! Sister Bryuzgina and I started crying. That was a miracle! She asked us multiple questions and we briefly explained to her again about the Restoration. We talked with her about the importance of reading the Book of Mormon and then praying about it. We discussed several other things and then she asks us, "What should I do next?" We then invited her to be baptized and she said yes!!! We are hoping the local missionaries have put them on date but we will find out tomorrow. She mentioned just how much she just loved us and she wishes we could be there too but we explained to her the need to be here and how the local missionaries are to be in their life for a reason. They are getting married two weeks from tomorrow so we have been worried that that will be a hurdle in teaching them and being baptized. We asked when we could call again and she said next week. She said, "The wedding is coming up but I'm trying to be home more often and to have quite time." She said, "I'm super excited to talk with you both next week, we just love you two and I will make sure Mike is on the phone with me next week, too!"

They are amazing. Sister Bryuzgina and I are praying that I stay here next transfer and don't go outbound. Haha - the only way I would accept to going outbound is if I got called to the Fort Lauderdale Mission and was assigned to their area! No, I know whatever happens needs to happen. They are truly amazing and I look forward to being here with them on this journey. Now that the local missionaries are involved we won't teach them anymore we will just be there as a second witness and back up support. But I'm excited for them. We will see what happens though.

Meet the Mormons is Here:

Meet the Mormons is finally here in our Visitor Center. When it first opened, a lot of people were asking us if we could play it for them. Surprisingly a lot of the people haven't seen it before which was a little shocking. We have posters now everywhere in our visitor's centers advertising it. It's pretty funny. So Friday evening was the debut showing of it and we were assigned to open it with one more companionship. It was really neat. We didn't welcome everyone because we trade off every week with the other companionship now and we allowed them to go first. It was a lot of fun being able to talk with everyone and to talk with them more about the movie. We will welcome everyone this Friday night, in regards to opening the movie, and then press the play button.

Wendell, Julio and John:
We dropped Wendell yesterday. It was so sad having to put him into the 'former investigator' category. I have tried calling him so many times and he just isn't answering. It was really sad having to do that but I know that's what was needing to be done.

Julio is doing well. He is continuing to meet with local missionaries and so I'm really happy about that. I told him I won't be calling him very often now since I know he is doing well and I need to be focusing my time on finding those who are prepared to be baptized. He understands.

I talked with John again on Monday, the one from South Africa. He has been very busy this past week and wasn't able to read the Book of Mormon and go to church. We talked with him about the importance of attending church and reading the Book of Mormon and he said he would work harder to attend church this upcoming Sunday. We invited him to be baptized and he said he would. We will see what happens. We stressed the importance of attending church and reading the Book of Mormon and shared with him the blessings that would come if he made the time for these things in his life. We are calling him next Sunday so we will see what happens.

Oreo Suckers:
This is before they dipped them
in chocolate (added by Sis. Skaggs'
mom)
Mom the Oreo Suckers were a hit! Everyone loved them. Yes, I did end up making them on P-day but I didn't get any pictures. They were delicious and I'm pretty sure I gained a couple of pounds from them. Don't worry, I shared. Sister Desjourdy wanted more, haha as usual! Thank you, mom, for the package!!

Sister Bryuzgina and I:
She is AMAZING!! Honestly, I'm going to cry when we have to be separated. It's weird to think I have been with her for almost 12 weeks, aka 3 months. She has become one of my best friends. She has been an amazing example to me. She has helped me in more ways than I can think of and I feel so blessed to have such an amazing companion. It's funny because at the end of last transfer I was like, "I don't think we will be together next transfer. I feel like I'm just too comfortable with you. I just won't learn anything." I was so wrong. I have learned more from her this transfer than I thought I could. She is so giving, so caring, so determined, so obedient, and someone who is firm in the Gospel despite what is happening around her in her life. It is going to be a sad day when President splits us but I know that that is what must be done. I feel so blessed to have her in my life!

Quick Side Note:
Temple Square at
Christmastime
So there is a likelihood that I will be going outbound this upcoming transfer more likely than I thought. I will find out next week if I'm going outbound. Everyone thinks President will hold me another transfer and then will send me in March. We will see what happens. Just thought I would give you a forewarning in case it does happen.

I love you all! Remember just how much your Father in Heaven loves you. Life is hard, I know it is. There is a scripture that I really just love a lot. We can find it in the Book of Mormon in Alma 34:41 "But that ye have patience, and bear with those afflictions, with a firm hope that ye shall one day, rest from all your afflictions."

I know this gospel to be true!

Mom and Dad please don't worry about me, I'm doing fine! I love you, be safe and continue to hold tight to the Gospel!

Love,
Sister Skaggs

A Week Full of A lot of Things!‏

To Everyone,

Christmas morning in my Christmas
Eve jammies!
SNOW, Christmas, Snow in Temecula??:
So I want to start off by saying wait, what???? SNOW in TEMECULA!! Why did I come to Utah? I could have just stayed in California and could have gotten snow. And several inches, too, from what I heard. The weather is so weird. But it makes sense because the weather in this half of the U.S. has been weird lately. So, it was Christmas Eve and we still hadn't gotten a single drop of snow on the ground, well, like maybe a small dusting, but it melted in hours. Rumor had it that we were expecting a storm to come through and well, sure enough, it did. We woke up Christmas morning to a WHITE CHRISTMAS! My first White Christmas ever. Family, I loved being able to talk with you on the phone!! It felt so good hearing your voices. Glad I was able to hold back the tears till the end. Hopefully I will be outbound for Mother's Day so I can Skype you guys! :)

Gifts from some unknown "elves"
Christmas here on Temple Square was different. So we woke up at our normal Christmas schedule 7:15 (early schedule) 7:30 (normal schedule) and then made breakfast (crepes, roasted potato). We were told we could do whatever we wanted, we just had to be in one of Theaters at 1:00 for the Christmas Devotional (which was amazing!). All of the different nationalities sang different songs with a slide show in the background of everything that led up to the Savior's birth. Then afterwards the whole mission gathered in the basement/mission office and had cookies etc. Then they mentioned that some elves in the Salt Lake area got together and bought Christmas presents for all the Sisters. This was just amazing and I wish I could thank whoever did it. But we go upstairs and in our South Visitor Center there were presents by zones scattered in different corners. We each received stockings just stuffed with a whole bunch of stuff and then each sister got super nice soft/fuzzy blankets with a picture of the Salt Lake Temple embroidered at the bottom. It was just remarkable. Whoever you elves are, thank you so much! It brought a smile to over 160 sisters faces.

The Square reopened at 3 pm and so we were all back to work. It continued to snow. Throughout the day we received a good couple of inches worth of snow. We had a shift in the Beehive House and then after we went downstairs and a nearby stake came and brought all of us sisters a traditional Christmas dinner (ham, potatoes, rolls, salad, green beans etc.). It was truly something special. With everything that has been occurring these past couple weeks I hope someday I can do something to repay them or at least pass it on. It truly reminds me of the spirit of Christmas. A season of giving. Here all of these families and elves didn't have to do any of this. We aren't their assigned missionaries so they have no obligation to do any of it. But instead, they chose to do so. It was definitely a Christmas I will NEVER forget.

Brown Family:
The Brown Family got BAPTIZED. I totally forgot to tell you last week. But all 6 of them were baptized almost 2 weeks ago and they are just doing amazing. Every Sunday the mom, Melissa, is like "I have been waiting for your call". The baptism took 2 1/2 hours and then it took 30 minutes for all 6 of them to be confirmed in Sacrament meeting the next day. I asked her how it was and she just loved it. I was able to talk with Bruce last Sunday and he was excited to be a member and to finally be baptized. The one thing they really work hard to do every day as a family is hold family prayer and scripture study. Melissa said they really love reading the Book of Mormon together everyday as a family. They are just taking it page by page until they finish it. Oh and get this, they have mentioned that they may get sealed as a family here in the Salt Lake Temple!! They live in Northern Arizona near Lake Powell. They are just a solid family! They are going to be such a powerful family when it comes to the Gospel. I love them so much!

Could Be Progressing:
So I don't like talking too much about people (aka - investigators) if I don't know for sure that things will turn out okay. Because here we get a lot of new/potential people that don't always turn into progressing investigators. But at the same time, I need to do my best to keep my emails/blog posts real and so if I just shared the success stories then you wouldn't get the full picture.

SNOW on Temple Square!
On Sunday Sister Bryuzgina and I took this couple from Miami, Florida on a tour through Temple Square. Such an amazing couple - we are both praying all turns out with them. They said they are in town to ski but they figured they would come to Temple Square to learn more about the church. We took them to Scriptures and Revelation and taught them the Revelation and then we felt like we should take them through God's Plan for his Family. This couple will be getting married at Disney World in about 3 weeks so we thought God's Plan would be perfect to take them to. They are just amazing. Michael (the soon to be husband) had mentioned that he had a copy of the Book of Mormon when he was younger but doesn't have one now so we mentioned we would give them one at the end. Well, as we were taking them through God's Plan they were both just crying. We talked with them a little bit more and then we mentioned that we would love to stay in contact with them so that we could share with them more about how this could all apply to their life. We mentioned that we would love to send local missionaries to come to their home and to share with them more. They accepted both invitations and were planning on reading the Book of Mormon. Tracy (the soon to be wife) was super excited to read it. Michael is like "by the time you call us next Saturday, Tracy will have the Book of Mormon read". We all just started laughing. I pray that they will be able to see how the Gospel of Jesus Christ will benefit their life; that they will be able to recognize that this is the only way back home to their Father in Heaven again. They are such a sweet couple. They are probably around the age of you, mom and dad. Sister Bryuzgina and I will be calling them on Saturday. With the wedding happening here soon things will become a bit complicated. They have 75 people coming to the wedding and it's at Disney World so they have a lot to do. They were going to Paris for the wedding but due to logistics it didn't work. Haha - that would have been crazy trying to teach them with them planning a wedding in Paris.

Wendell - well I don't know what is up with Wendell. He isn't really a priority to call anymore. I mean, I will call when I have time. I don't feel he is fully prepared. Sister Bryuzgina and I are trying to just focus our time on the elect - those who are truly prepared instead of trying to find those who we will have to push. Believe it or not, there are elect people out there. We just have to search for them. In our [mission] call letter it states "...As you serve with all your heart, might, and strength, the Lord will lead you to those who are PREPARED to be baptized..." So I know there are people who are prepared to accept the invitation to apply the Gospel of Jesus Christ into their lives. I just need to focus on finding them.

John is from Cape Town, South Africa. He came on chat about a week ago wanting to meet with local missionaries. When I first called him I didn't think he was prepared but I set up another appointment with him. I was super 'smart' and forgot to write down the appointment and so I missed it. Yeah, not a good thing to do when you have a 2nd appointment with an investigator. I contemplated calling him the next day because I didn't know if he would have even remembered our appointment. Well, I decided I would call him and one of the first things he says is, "It's okay I understand. I was waiting for you to call but you never did. But I understand." That was a complete blow. I learned a VERY VALUABLE lesson! I will NEVER miss another appointment with an investigator again! We ended up talking for a long time, close to an hour. We did a lot of how to begin teaching (aka - getting to know you). But then we were able to weave the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith into the conversation. He mentioned he was going to go onto lds.org and read the Book of Mormon until the local missionaries came into the picture and brought him his own copy. He is pretty devoted to his own faith but I invited him to be baptized and explained the importance of doing so. He said that he would be baptized if he came to know that this was all true. We briefly talked about him going to church on Sunday but didn't talk a whole lot about it since the conversation was over how long they should be in the first place. His girlfriend and several good friends are members and so whenever he goes home he always goes to church with them. He has read a couple of pages from the Book of Mormon before. So we will see what happens. We will talk with him again on Sunday morning.

Meet the Mormons hits the Legacy Theater:
Monday morning we had a training with the Missionary Department. I feel like we have a training with the Missionary Department every week. But they were telling us about what will be happening with Meet the Mormons. Starting Jan. 2nd Meet the Mormons will begin showing in the Legacy Theater. We have been anticipating it coming soon and so now it's here. I figured they would wait until the lights shut off. What will happen is currently we play "Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration" in there but they will be replacing it with Meet the Mormons. We are super excited for this change. We all feel a lot of success will come from this. If you want to see it there you have to go online and get free tickets from the scheduling office on lds.org and apparently on Friday night we are actually going to have a stand-by line. It will be interesting. This movie is AMAZING - not just for people not of our faith but for members as well.
I'm excited for summer time because that's when tourist season really picks up.

Packages:

Mom, yes I have received all of the packages by now. Haha - all of the sisters think you're the best. I'm excited to make the chocolate covered Oreo's tonight! Everyone is like "no way she made those." I was like "yah". Everyone is like "you win, Sister Skaggs, now at the most packages." Haha. Love you guys!

A Noble Birthright:
This morning in personal study I was studying a lot about how we have been given so much and with that, so much is required. We are born with a noble birthright. We truly have been given so much. There is a scripture in D&C 82:3 that says, "For of him unto whom much is given much is required..." Our Father in Heaven has given us so much! First of all he has given us his son. What father would give up his son for others? But I was thinking about what I can do to give back to my Father in Heaven. You know when we are baptized we are automatically re-enlisted into God's army and we are to fight and defend the Kingdom of God. I was thinking, "What am I doing to help win this battle?" But really though, if you think about it, what are you doing to win this battle? Could you stand up at the last day and say I was a noble and valiant one? Did I truly do all that I could to defend the kingdom of God? I was thinking a lot about how I am preparing myself so that I won't be taken out in this battle. And it reminded me a lot about my Savior Jesus Christ. We have been promised that as we rely on him we will be saved in the last day. I love 3 Nephi 9:22 [Book of Mormon] "Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the Kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life, and have taken it up again; therefore repent, and come unto me ye ends of the earth, and be saved."

I can promise you that as you come unto Christ, that as you rely on Him you will be able to stand firm and hold out unto the end. This Gospel is true. This is the ONLY way back home. For those who take the Gospel of Jesus Christ and apply it to their life will be saved and will live with their Father in Heaven again.

I love you all so much! I know a lot is going on back home with things. Everyone is in my prayers. I wish some people didn't have to suffer and I wonder why Heavenly Father allows it but I know it's apart of the plan. Your all in my prayers everyday. Continue to be strong and fight to the end. Love you! Oh, and Happy New Year!!

Sister Skaggs
